UK Trip Part 2

Here we are in Scarborough, Yorkshire, catching up with our friends Ron & Betty Southerton, who visited us in NZ about 18 years ago.

On the way here we visited a bird sanctuary and saw gannets nesting in cliffs, (pictures later) and passed this very large power station near Selby.

Pictures - part 1 - NZ to Surrey

Here are a few pictures. This computer does not have Paint or Photoshop and has cropped some pictures, but my limited time is running out.

Our big bird at LA.

Looking down over Wales.

Lunch with the Jater rellies in the Victoria Inn, Byfleet which Helen's gt-gt-gt-grandfather set up and ran until the 1800's.

Byfleet High Road and a squirrel in St Mary's Church (built around 1300).

Gordon & Geertje visit our Magpie Cottage.

Houses at Hambledon, half a km from our cottage.

In England Day 4

Here we are in Surrey Family History Centre, but it's not looking promising, most of the search has been on LDS records that are on the Net.

It was a long flight, and not made better by the Americans at LA who fingerprinted and photographed all passenger, just to get into a room for 2 hours.

Our Magpie Cottage is lovely, and set in countryside in a world of old villages and houses. We visited Brooklands (museum of old race cars and planes), had a nice lunch with Helen & Hugh (Jater rellies) in the Victoria Inn, Byfleet that was probably first built by the Jaters. Yesterday met up with Gordon & Geertje after 34 years and had a nice lunch in our local, which has a sign 'warm beer & lousy food'. (Not!).

Internet is very hard to find, and as for a PC to download photos..... still looking.

One Day to Go

Tomorrow night 9:45pm we should be away on one of these. I will try and get some updates as we find Internet screens, not sure if I will be able to put up pictures, we'll see.

David & Ruth are here (Manurewa) till 28th Sept. Sunday we have lunch lined up in the Victoria Inn, Byfleet with a Jater rellie (we share gt-gt-gt-gt-grandfathers) and Monday lunch with Gordon & Geertje (Robert's god-parents, originally our neighbours in Ommoord, Rotterdam).

Learning Irish

Gaelic is not easy, but it is entertaining and challenging. And the Irish have some interesting proverbs.

This one 'mind your own business' translates to:

Don’t bother with the son of the beggarman and the son of the beggarman won’t bother you!

Here's the original text: Ná bac le mac an bhacaigh is ní bhacfaidh mac an bhacaigh leat!
