The Driveway

The driveway is finally done, about 6 tons of concrete(including the concrete wall) has been removed and put into Payless Bins. All the broken driveway concrete has been replaced by paving stones. The last one laid was a good feeling! The bin will go tomorrow.

NZ Herald August 2nd, 1932

Here are a few shots from the old newspapers we found under the flooring at Rocky Bay, Waiheke.

Want a job as a model girls? Get that tape measure out!

Want to buy a section in Parnell for £25? Same price as a radio!!

Need your teeth done? Here's a good deal. About half a week's average wage of
£5.

Remember this place, David? It was new in 1932!

Blurgh!

I guess these were quite a lot of money on £5 a week, but that 1926 Ford Model T would fetch $30,000 to $40,000 today, about an average year's salary. John Andrew Ford are still going, at the same business.

More Cars from Chelsea Hillclimb

Here are a few more of the cars at the start line. All that polished alloy! The Austin 7 Specials have a 750 or 800cc engine with a 2 bearing crankshaft. They go like the clappers - for a while. #6 is a Lotus 6, the model before the famous and widely copied Lotus 7 (you knew that).

Some pretty impressive supercharged and normally aspirated MGs from the 30's.
That's a lady driver in the green one #16, she won the prize for 'the one who had the most fun'.

Chelsea Sugar Works Hillclimb 2006

This annual hillclimb is run by the Waitemata Branch of the Vintage Car Club in the grounds of the Chelsea sugar works just north of the harbour bridge. About 40 cars entered on a nice sunny day.

Ugly Brute was running well after a week of hassles with the engine getting water in the oil, finally resolved to be a crack in the combustion chamber on #2 cylinder and the spare cylinder head has been fitted. Photography (by Julie) was difficult around the start area as it was shady and dark with bright sunlight in the background.

The view from Ugly-Brute's control room, and some of the waiting queue.

The oldest car was a 1913 DeLage, in original condition (unrestored). Love those wooden spokes! That's the brass acetylene generator on the driver's side running board for the lamps.
