Historic 4-wheel-drive day
Out today with 8 other Land Rovers to an historic vehicles event hosted by the Manukau 4WD Club. It consisted of a series of trials, followed by lunch and a tour of the 400 acre farm near Ramarama.
This old Series 1 1953 Land Rover was the points winner on the day, helped a little by the vehicle age adjustment, but he still drove better than I did.
Here are a few of the other Land Rovers in action.
This Nissan was the only one in the roll-bar & helmet class, and he had some harder sections. He was also very useful for rescuing this lady in distress!

The farm tour ended up on top of a hill at with views to Bombay and Manukau Harbour.

Land Rovers at Jonkers farm
A day out for about 15 Land Rovers working through trials sections of difficult terrain. Best suited to vehicles with roll-bars, V8s and gnarly mud tyres rather than my truck in pretty much original condition.
Here are 4 short movies. Some gaps due to dodging flying mud!

Warbirds over Wanaka 2012
We bought tickets for the Friday Practice and got a look at most of the planes in action. Great weather and such a good mountain background.
This high performance glider has a 60:1 glide ratio (it flys 60 meters and drops 1 meter) and as well as being aerobatic, in the right wind it can fly from Omarama to Gisborne and back at 26,000 feet!
These Yak 3s are high performance and shot down many German fighters in WW2. It was the first public outing for one of them.
The Corsair performs well with a 3000 HP engine, hence the cranked wings to give the prop clearance on carrier landings and takeoffs.
There were two Dakotas, one from Ardmore, the other Christchurch.
Two P40 Kittyhawks took to the air.
This Hawker Beechcraft Texan T6C was on a visiting road show as an air force trainer.
A Hawker Hunter flew in from Queenstown as the runway was too short at Wanaka.
A large number of choppers put on a synchronised display.
The Air Force Hercules put on its show of short landing and taxying backwards. In the second photo it has released 'chaff' or pyrotechnics to confuse head-seeking missiles.
The Vampire is always nice to see flying.
Two Spitfires made a brief showing.
A pair of Mustang P51s flew a fast display then disappeared down the Clutha River valley before popping up again.
Model aircraft flyer Frazer Briggs did the best flying on the day, totally in control of this model.
I really was expecting some large displays of WW1 aircraft, but this one was the only one I managed to photograph and the two planes stayed in the distance.
